Application design and implementation

CONTEXT

Personal project

STATUS

Live demo available

Hosted on AWS with fictional data and Firebase disabled. Changes stay in memory and reset when you reload or restart the demo.

Project Overview

FinancialSummary is a React and TypeScript personal finance workspace with a local ledger, fictional demo data, and optional Firebase storage.

Problem / Context

It brings income, expenses, recurring payments, assets, and liabilities into one workspace.

Key Features

  • Transactions, spending categories, and monthly summaries.
  • Recurring income and expense schedules.
  • CSV export and text-based Chase credit card PDF import.
  • Chinese and English interfaces.
  • Local, demo, and optional Google sign-in/cloud modes.

Tech Stack

  1. React
  2. TypeScript
  3. Vite
  4. Firebase

Architecture

Vite builds the browser application. Local data stays in the browser; Firebase authentication and Firestore support optional cloud storage. PDF import processes statement files rather than connecting to a bank.

Technical Challenges

Demo data must remain separate from a user's real ledger. The implementation distinguishes demo, local, and cloud workspaces, with tests covering the demo/local boundary.

Engineering Decisions / Trade-offs

Local and fictional-data modes need no API keys. Cloud setup is optional and requires configured access rules. A public showcase can therefore demonstrate the interface without exposing a personal cloud ledger.

Results

The public demo is hosted on AWS CloudFront with a private S3 origin. It opens directly with fictional data and Firebase disabled. Visitors can add sample transactions and reset their changes without connecting a personal ledger. The build, 144 tests, and deployment checks passed; no production usage or financial outcome is claimed.
